Tjernstrom, 2002-2007), and the Postgraduate
Education Committee (Prof. Farouk Safi, 2007 –
to date), Drs. Torab and Fikri are members of
the Research Advisory Board (RAB). Prof.
Branicki , a former member of the RAB, also
chairs the Undergraduate Curriculum Policy
and Review Committee (2006 – to date), Dr.
Torab also held membership of this Committee
(2005-08) as well as the Health Informatics
Group. Prof. Branicki was also a member of the
Budget and Finance Committee and currently
sits on the Education Advisory Board and Faculty
Council. Prof. Safi also sat as a member of the
Budget and Finance Committee and has been
a member of various committees, including
Education Advisory Board, Research Grants
Committee, Promotion Committee, Health and
Welfare Committee and the Oncology Research
Group, Prof. Branicki and Torab also being
members of this Strategic Research Priority
Group for Oncology. Drs. Fawaz and Fikri are
members of the Medical Education Research
Group. Prof. Safi has completed commitments
as Coordinator of the Gastrointestinal Module.
Dr. Fikri Abu Zidan, also a member of the Medical
Informatics Committee, was awarded the
Faculty’s Distinguished Performance Award for
Teaching and Research for 2004 and Special
Endeavours in Human Services Prize at 5th
Annual Research Conference, April 2004.
At Tawam Hospital Prof. Branicki is a member of
the Ethics and Consultation Committee, the
Trauma Committee and also chairs the Quality
Improvement Committee for the Department of
Surgery, Dr. Fawaz Torab also being a member
of this Committee. He is also a member of the
Infection Control Committee and the Nutritional
Committee at Tawam. Dr. Fikri is Co-chair of the
Trauma Committee.
Prof. Branicki acted as Chair of three
Subcommittees for Sheikh Hamdan Awards in
2004 funded externally by the Arab Health
Foundation, and Dr. Torab acted as
Subcommittee members for the consideration
of various Awards. Prof. Branicki was again
involved as Chair of a Subcommittee for the
2006 Awards and Dr. Torab was also involved as
a Subcommittee member. Prof. Branicki once
more acted as a Subcommittee Chair for the
2008 Awards with Dr. Torab being a
Subcommittee member.
Prof. Derek Younge held nationwide
responsibilities for the Terry Fox Fund for Cancer
Research and was also the Director of the Clinical
Sciences Course (2005 – 2007) and oversaw
activities of the Al Ain Orthopaedic Club. This
was founded recently and was previously
chaired by Associate Professor Karl Lunsjo, who
returned to Sweden in April 2006 after four
successful years in the Department. Prof. Safi and
Prof. Tjernstrom organized an Oncology
Research Day held in Al Ain in November 2005
with presentations from holders of Terry Fox
Cancer Fund awards.
