with‘Experimental Radiology’, Charité University,
Berlin, Germany and an investigation of the
development of NSF after IP administration of
various GBCA [FMHS grant 2008/ animal
experiments ongoing]; collaboration with the
FMHS Departments of Pharmacology, Anatomy,
and international collaboration with
‘Experimental Radiology’, Charité University,
Berlin, Germany.
We are also currently investigating tumour
angiogenesis in vitro cancer cell lines and an
animal model using a novel MR contrast agent
consisting of paramagnetic iron oxide
nanoparticles attached to RGD peptide that can
potentially be used to detect early cancers in
solid organs such as the liver.
Molecular Imaging
We are actively involved in the forthcoming
PET-CT installation in Tawam Hospital. Clinical
research in oncology and neuroscience is
pending with this new facility.
Neuroimaging
Neuroimaging plays a key role in analysis,
diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the
central nervous system. Magnetic Resonance
Imaging is the tool of choice for the examination
of the CNS in vivo without ionization radiation.
Computed assisted evaluation allows for
morphometric, fine-structural as well as for
functional examinations. We are working at the
implementation of sophisticated software (FSL
& FreeSurfer) and adaptation to local needs and
testing with normative external data-sets is the
first step of this project. In a second step a small
number of dedicated local MRI examinations
(Tawam, Al Ain Hospitals) will be evaluated.
These efforts are also related to the upcoming
projects in the field of cognitive sciences at the
main university.
Textural Analysis in Liver Fibrosis
We have completed a study this year with the
departments of physics and molecular biology
to assess whether we could quantify textural
disruption of the liver parenchyma in an animal
model of liver fibrosis. Textural analysis uses
digital data from CT and MR images to assess the
degree of disruption of organ patterns from
pathological processes such as cancer or fibrosis.
This novel technique improves the sensitivity of
digital images in detecting subtle changes in
solid organ structures.
