Medical Education third year and involves a follow-up of Year 1 students into year 2. The study assesses students experience and confidence in 31 identified skills. A year later, students are asked to reflect on these skills (particularly where they thought they lacked experience) and indicate what activities contributed to the development of these skills. Two complete years of data have been completed (McLean, Shaban) 2. Student perceptions of research: With projects now only voluntary, we are looking at why students choose to do research and any difficulties they may encounter (McLean, Kershaw) manuscripts are in the process of being completed (McLean) 6.Student project 2: Meeting the competencies of the CanMEDS roles in the FMHS curriculum. Where are they being met What activities contribute to their development MSC1 students began during the summer. A poster was presented at the GCC conference in January 2009 (McLean) 7. Community Medicine Health Promotion Project: Evaluation. This project was implemented a few years ago. The intention is to publish the outcomes of this project (Barss, Grivna). 3. Female and male medical students’ perceptions of the practice of medicine: Collaborative work with the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Final year students at the two institutions were interviewed in terms of being male and female students in their different cultures. The analysis began in November 2008. The follow-up of students as interns will begin in December 2009. A submission was been made to the UAEU Research Day (McLean) 4. Community Medicine curricula around the Gulf: Collaboratively with Dr Shaban and funded by a FMHS grant from Prof Aw. The survey has been piloted and distributed to the Deans of the various medical schools in the GCC. The aim is to collect data on what is included in the curriculum and how students learn different aspects of Community Medicine (e.g. projects in the community, tutorials, etc.) (Aw, McLean, Shaban) 5. Student project 1: Female Emirati patient choice of a physician and their experience with medical students. MSC 1 students undertook this project in the summer. 220 patients were interviewed. Data have been analysed and presented as a poster at the GCC Students’ Conference. A submission was made to the UAEU Research Day. An abstract will be submitted for the 2009 AMEE conference. Two 113
Neuroscience Research Group Annual Report Mission The mission of the Group shall be to: • Support and promote neuroscience in Al Ain and the UAE • Give encouragement and assistance to, and strengthen ties between, its members • Organize seminars, congresses and workshops in the field of neuroscience • Collaborate with and participate in scientific activities of other groups in the field of neuroscience nationally and internationally. • Develop educational programs at the UAE University that lead to higher degrees in Neuroscience Major Achievements In the year 2008 the members of the group have presented several abstracts in national and international meetings and a number of publications have resulted from their research activities. Several members of the group have received major research grants from local and international bodies including Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, USA, Shaikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences, Terry Fox Grant, Emirates Foundation, and several FMHS & UAE University Research Grants. Several members of the group hold membership in prestigious organizations and serve on the editorial board of international journals and committees. Also the group members collaborate with a number of research groups, institutions and organizations within the UAE & abroad.
