Dean’s Message
It is my pleasure in my final report as Dean to offer sincere thanks to
faculty, students and technical staff for another very high level of
research productivity during the calendar year 2008. Professor Wim
Lammers is to be congratulated yet again for editing the diverse
information into a cohesive document. Thanks also to Ms. Ivanna
Lizarriturri for the improved style.
Grant sponsorship at FMHS involves a wide range of benefactors
such as Sheikh Hamdan Awards for Medical Science, Terry Fox
Cancer Funds in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the Michael J Fox
Foundation. The British Council in the UAE continues to enable
student research electives to the United Kingdom in partnership
with FMHS. Our dedicated students and their research mentors,
both faculty and staff, should be suitably proud of their continued
high level of achievement during 2008. Their efforts certainly paid
off in the 6th GCC Medical Students Conference in Al Ain.
Major research conferences celebrate the efforts of our Research
Priority Groups. Many international researchers attend these
meetings as regular delegates to enjoy the well earned scientific
reputations of the meetings. It is also a joy to see greater participation
in the programs of UAEU graduate students, residents, research
fellows and clinical colleagues from local hospitals whose
contributions to oral presentations and posters match international
standards.
A highlight of 2008 was the announcement of a Centre of Excellence
funded by the National Research Foundation for a Genes and
Disease collaboration from FMHS and Zayed University led by
Professor Lihadh Al-Gazali and Dr. Bassam Ali.
The UAE University Research Affairs sector led by Her Excellency Dr.
Maitha Al Shamsi, ably assisted by Professor Mohamed Fahim, and
the FMHS research administration team led by Dr. Sehamuddin
Galadari are warmly appreciated by all FMHS researchers.
It is the challenge of all good biomedical research to enhance the
quality of patient care through improved diagnosis or better
treatment. With growing support from Tawam Hospital - Johns
Hopkins Medicine and Al Ain Hospital - Medical University of Vienna
VAMED, there is clear evidence of positive steps in enhancing clinical
research. Thank you!
