FMHS students contributed 14/74 Oral and 18/198 Poster
presentations and two of our presentations won awards:
“The cellular mechanisms of Missense mutation in ALK1 causing
hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Type 2”, Al-Awadhi A, Al-
Suwaidi S, John A, Karuvantevida N, Allistair N & Ali B. Supervisor:
Doctor Bassam Ali, Department of Pathology. Basic Science, Oral
Award.
“Mutational analysis of the predicted secondary RNA structure
of Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) packaging signal”, Al
Shamsi N, Al Neyadi A. Supervisor: Professor Tahir Rizvi,
Department of Medical Microbiology. Doctor Rafia Ghubash,
Oral Award.
Abstracts from the conference were published in a special edition
of the “Journal of Medical Sciences”, the official publication of
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical
Sciences.
The event was supported by a variety of generous sponsors
including: Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Hamdan Award
for Medical Sciences, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi
Company for Onshore Oil Operations, Al Ain Hospital Medical
University of Vienna, Tawam Hospital in affiliation with John
Hopkins Medicine, The British Council, Lagap SA, Lari, FMHS,
UAEU and others. ETIHAD Airlines were the official carriers for the
conference.
Summer Research
Around 50 students took part in research activities during the
summer and many of the projects were carried out in FMHS
Research Laboratories. Four students were selected to join the
UK Research Scholarship Program. This initiative is supported by
the British Council and FMHS and provides opportunities for
selected students to participate in research activities in‘cuttingedge’research
laboratories in the UK during the summer holidays.
Fatima Rashid Ali Al Kindi visited the laboratory of Professor
Catherine Sarraf, Department of Biomedical Sciences, University
of Westminster, London; Hind Saif Sultan Al Dhaheri visited the
