Trauma
1) Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Provider
and Instructor Courses: It was deemed essential
to train UAE doctors using ATLS principles to
improve the management of trauma patients.
More than 889 doctors have taken the Provider
Course to date in UAE. We have been
encouraged by the increasing support and
popularity of ATLS in the UAE. This course has
been conducted at the Faculty of Medicine and
Health Sciences four times every year. A greater
awareness of the value of ATLS enhancement of
the early management of severe trauma is more
evident in our setting.
2) Course on Focused Assessment Sonography
(FAST) for Trauma. Twelve courses have been run
since the establishment of this course. 216
doctors have received“hands on”training on the
use of FAST. The majority were senior registrars
from Emergency Medicine (Fig 2). We have
noticed increasing support and popularity for
FAST in clinical practice in our setting. We have
increased the annual number of point of care
ultrasound courses from two to four. The
demand from participants, local and overseas,
is increasing. Sonosite has loaned four advanced
Sonosite hand-held ultrasound machines to
help us run our courses. These activities led to
the establishment of The Clinical Skills Training
Centre at the Faculty of Medicine and Health
Sciences, UAE University (www.fmhs.uaeu.ac.ae/cstc)
C) Preparation of an International
Conference on Trauma Management,
Critical Care and Prevention
The Trauma Group is actively involved in
planning an international Conference entitled
‘Trauma Management, Critical Care and
Prevention. The above conference will take
place at the Intercontinental Hotel and Resort
at Al-Ain on 17-19 February 2009. The
Conference is an initiative of the Trauma Group
at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
(FMHS), United Arab Emirates University and
planning for the conference began on 4
February 2007.
Five organizations are involved in the
preparation of this conference:
1. Trauma Group, Faculty of Medicine and Health
Sciences, UAE University.
2. Critical Care Department, Tawam Hospital in
affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine.
3. Al-Ain Hospital managed by University of
Vienna/Va Med.
4. Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD).
5. Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Sciences.

Registry of Al-Ain City was one of the major
achievements of the Trauma Group.
The scientific program was built on controversial
themes. Parallel sessions will cover four main
areas: Disaster Medicine, Trauma Management,
Critical Care and Injury Prevention. Four
workshops are to be held on 16 February 2009.
These will include ‘hands on training’ in four
areas: Focused Assesment Sonography of
Trauma, Critical Care Ultrasound, Percutaneous
Tracheostomy and Establishing a Trauma
Registry.
The main conference will be three full days.
Sixteen well known international experts from
North America, Europe, Canada, South Africa,
Australia and the GCC countries have accepted
the participation in the conference.
