The Immunoregulation <strong>and</strong><br />

Infection <strong>Research</strong> Group<br />

Annual Report<br />

The main aim <strong>of</strong> the Immunoregulation <strong>and</strong> Infection <strong>Research</strong><br />

Priority Group is to promote basic <strong>and</strong> clinical research in the<br />

fields <strong>of</strong> immunology, microbiology, <strong>and</strong> related disciplines.<br />

Through its wide membership, which encompasses investigators<br />

in a diverse number <strong>of</strong> departments in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Science</strong>s <strong>and</strong> affiliated hospitals, the Group aims to<br />

facilitate inter-departmental collaborations in basic <strong>and</strong> clinical<br />

research broadly related to immunological disorders, infectious<br />

diseases, <strong>and</strong> microbial pathogenesis. The group also undertakes<br />

sponsorship <strong>of</strong> international <strong>and</strong> regional visitors <strong>and</strong> speakers<br />

to FMHS <strong>and</strong> periodically becomes responsible for organizing<br />

international medical scientific conferences.<br />

Publication details <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> the Immunoregulation <strong>and</strong><br />

Infection <strong>Research</strong> Priority Group can be found under their<br />

II. Sponsored Events<br />

1. The Third International Immunology Meeting<br />

The major event during 2008 which occupied much <strong>of</strong> the group<br />

members’ time was the hosting <strong>of</strong> the 3rd Al-Ain International<br />

Immunology Meeting, held under the title "Immunoregulation<br />

in Chronic Inflammatory Disorders" over the period 17-20 March<br />

2008. The meeting was held under the patronage <strong>of</strong> HE Sheikh<br />

Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister <strong>of</strong> Higher Education<br />

<strong>and</strong> Scientific <strong>Research</strong> <strong>and</strong> Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the UAE University, <strong>and</strong><br />

represented the third in a series, the first two having been held<br />

in 1993 <strong>and</strong> 2002 in Al-Ain, <strong>United</strong> Arab Emirates. The meeting<br />

was organized under the umbrella <strong>of</strong> the International Union <strong>of</strong><br />

Immunological Societies <strong>and</strong> was supported by Nature<br />

Immunology, the premium scientific journal in the field. Twenty<br />
