The Immunoregulation and Infection Research Group Annual Report The main aim of the Immunoregulation and Infection Research Priority Group is to promote basic and clinical research in the fields of immunology, microbiology, and related disciplines. Through its wide membership, which encompasses investigators in a diverse number of departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and affiliated hospitals, the Group aims to facilitate inter-departmental collaborations in basic and clinical research broadly related to immunological disorders, infectious diseases, and microbial pathogenesis. The group also undertakes sponsorship of international and regional visitors and speakers to FMHS and periodically becomes responsible for organizing international medical scientific conferences. I. Original Publications by Group Members in the year 2008 Publication details of the members of the Immunoregulation and Infection Research Priority Group can be found under their respective FMHS departments. II. Sponsored Events 1. The Third International Immunology Meeting The major event during 2008 which occupied much of the group members’ time was the hosting of the 3rd Al-Ain International Immunology Meeting, held under the title "Immunoregulation in Chronic Inflammatory Disorders" over the period 17-20 March 2008. The meeting was held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the UAE University, and represented the third in a series, the first two having been held in 1993 and 2002 in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates. The meeting was organized under the umbrella of the International Union of Immunological Societies and was supported by Nature Immunology, the premium scientific journal in the field. In addition, 15 local speakers from FMHS, Tawam hospital, and Department of Preventive Medicine participated in the conference. All in all, a total of 58 plenary seminars, 18 short talks and 89 posters were presented during the conference. The number of registrants for the meeting was 423 from more than 30 countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Meeting Report A report on the meeting was commissioned by Nature Immunology. The report summarized the major scientific findings discussed during the conference. The meeting report was published in the July 2008 issue of Nature Immunology and was accompanied by a short editorial praising the positive steps taken by the UAE authorities in promoting the culture of scientific inquiry. {Ref: Basel al-Ramadi, Adrian Hayday, and Wilhelm Schwaeble. Meeting Proceedings: Special Issue of Clinical Immunology A special, regular, issue of the journal Clinical Immunology, will be devoted for the publication of selected reviews and original articles contributed by invited speakers at the conference. The journal Clinical Immunology is the official journal of the USA-based "Clinical Immunology Society" and has an impact factor of 3.6. The special edition was published in January 2009 under the guest editorship of Prof. Basel al-Ramadi and Prof. Miodrag Lukic. 2. Sponsored Events – cont.
