Trauma Trauma imaging is an important part of our daily work and road traffic accidents a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UAE. We have been working with colleagues in orthopaedic surgery to establish the role of radiographs and three dimensional computed tomographic models of the skeleton in assessing the type and extent of fractures. Sports Medicine Imaging We continue our interest in injuries sustained by sportsmen especially long distance runners and soccer players. We investigated knee injuries in runners this year and are currently investigating changes in Hoffa’s fat pad in the knee joint following trauma and osteoarthrosis of the knee. Osteoporosis and Body Fat Composition in Peri- Menopausal Women Osteoporosis is an under recognized health problem in UAE national women and is the major cause of bone fractures in older women. We are currently measuring the bone density and body fat composition of peri-menopausal women living in Al Ain to determine if there is a direct correlation between the body composition values (percentage body fat and lean mass) and bone mineral density using dual energy X-ray absorption (DEXA) scans. This study will provide a databank of bone mineral density measurements for women living in Al Ain and we hope this study will confirm the correlation between percentage body fat and bone density in women older than 40 years. Contrast medium research We are active in this area of radiology. Two studies were performed during the year: An in vitro study of the efficiency of adding antibiotics to non-ionic contrast media for intradiscal [UAEU grant 2008/ completed]; collaboration with the FMHS Department of Pharmacology, and international collaboration
