University for research relating to laparoscopic
treatment of perforated peptic ulcer. He has
also collaborated in studies with Faculty in
Medical Microbiology regarding in vitro
investigations of breast cancer.
Associate Professor Fayez Hammad commenced
research activities in 2008 with two new projects.
The first of these -“The effect of NSAIDs
(nonsteroidal antinflammatory drugs) on the
obstructed kidney”was supported by a Faculty
Seed Grant. The appointment of our research
assistant Mr. Loay Lubbad in April 2008, enabled
the commencement of this work. This project
investigates the effect of NSAIDS on the function
of the kidney in a rat model of unilateral ureteric
obstruction. The main indicators of renal
function being measured in this study are
glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal blood flow
(RBF) and fractional execretion of sodium. GFR
and RBF are measured using the clearance of
inulin and para-aminohippuric acid, respectively.
The model has now been established and
studies commenced with the first group of
control animals. The second new project -
“Spatial and temporal electrical impulse
propagation in the normal and the obstructed
ureter” being carried out in collaboration with
Prof. Wim Lammers from the Department of
Physiology was supported by a Faculty Research
Grant. The project investigates the effect of
ureteric obstruction on electrical activities of the
ureter. We are using small surface probes which
have 160 microelectrodes on the surface to map
the electrical impulses of the normal and
obstructed ureter. The work is almost in its final
stages and an abstract has been accepted for
presentation in the Annual meetings of both
the American Urological Association and the
European Association of Urology.
Departmental research interests are thus diverse,
currently encompassing general surgery,
oncology, ophthalmology, trauma and urology.
Dr. Mahmoud has ongoing research
collaboration in Canada in Ophthalmology. As
the Department grows in stature with a new
medical laboratory specialist in post to act as
laboratory manager and surgeons with
subspeciality interests, it is perceived that
experimental research initiatives will expand
in keeping with strategic themes which have
been adopted in the Faculty.
