ARTT 191 Honors History of Art II:<br />

Particular topics of specialized interest in the history of art will be the main material of the<br />

course. Students will participate in a series of museum trips and will be expected to make<br />

connections between material learned in other Honors courses and the information presented<br />

in this one. Students will get an enriched experience in understanding art as part of a wider<br />

world view. Admission by permission of instructor. May replace General Education course<br />

ARTT 215 (CART 215) History of Art I:<br />

This course is the first half of a yearlong survey of the history of art, with specific emphasis<br />

on the examination of the representation of ideas in terms of the science of interpretation<br />

(hermeneutics) and the language of signs (semiotics). This examination is specifically geared<br />

to those for whom the study of the history of art is a prelude to a life of design. The course<br />

also covers the history of the development of style, from early cave paintings to the beginnings<br />

of the Renaissance. Students develop a visual vocabulary and an acute awareness of style<br />

as a function of historical conditions; they also learn to decode images in a way that enables<br />

them to be more sophisticated designers of visual communication material. Prerequisite: ENGL<br />

110. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

ARTT 216 (CART 216) History of Art II:<br />

This course is the second half of a yearlong survey of the history of art, with specific emphasis<br />

on the examination of the representation of ideas in the terms of the science of interpretation<br />

(hermeneutics) and the language of signs (semiotics). This examination is specifically geared<br />

to those for whom the study of the history of art is a prelude to a life of design. The course<br />

also covers the history of the development of style, from the early Renaissance to the modern<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

ARTT 244 (MEDA 244) Topics in Film:<br />

The study of selected film topics through viewing, in-class analysis, and discussion. Topics<br />

range from significant directors, producers, and cultural issues reflected in various films, to<br />

historical periods and special film genres. Prerequisite: Placement at ENGL 111 level. 3 sem.<br />

hrs. 3 crs.<br />

ARTT 245 (SPCM 245) Film and Videotape Production:<br />

A practical course in filmmaking; introduction to the techniques and vocabulary of film<br />

production. Each student produces, directs, and edits a short film of his or her own design.<br />

3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

ARTT 275 (MEDA 275) Photojournalism:<br />

This course consists of two principal components: a historical and topical survey of approaches<br />

to photojournalism in newspapers and magazines from the time of the perfection of the halftone<br />

process to the present; field assignments involving coverage of local events and, where possible<br />

or appropriate, part-time work on a local newspaper or magazine. Students must supply their<br />

own 35 mm cameras. Estimated cost for materials: $75. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

ARTT 380-381 Cooperative Education in Art, I and II:<br />

This course is designed to link college with the world by assisting students to obtain meaningful,<br />

academically relevant work experiences directly related to their career goals. Professional<br />

development is enhanced through meetings with a faculty advisor and structured assignments<br />

based on the work experience. Cooperative Education office approval required. 3 sem. hrs.<br />

3 crs.
