CART 245 Sound Design:<br />

An introduction to basic principles and production of audio as it applies to computer arts and<br />

design. The course explores the structural and conceptual relationships between sound and<br />

image. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C+ in CART 110 and 120. 3 sem. hrs. 1.5 hrs. studio/<br />

lab per week. 3 crs.<br />

CART 250 Modeling for Digital Animation I:<br />

An introduction to modeling, texturing, and rendering for three-dimensional digital objects<br />

and environments. Topics include lighting and color, concepts of three-dimensional space,<br />

geometric transformation, and methods for smoothing. Working from concept art, students<br />

will be introduced to the modeling “pipeline” and the theory of, and methods for, compositing.<br />

Prerequisites: CART 214 and 225. 3 sem. hrs. 1.5 hrs. studio/lab per week. 3 crs.<br />

CART 255 Modeling for Digital Animation II:<br />

An introduction to modeling, texturing, and rendering for three-dimensional digital characters.<br />

Topics include character development and design, anatomy, and animation theory and<br />

methods utilizing rigging, articulation and kinematics. Prerequisites: CART 250. 3 sem. hrs.<br />

1.5 hrs. studio/lab per week. 3 crs.<br />

CART 259 (CISC 259) Web Design II:<br />

This course presents more advanced design techniques for Web site development and<br />

information architecture. The overall structure, flow, and organization of the Web site are<br />

discussed. The concepts and criteria introduced in Web Design I are utilized with added<br />

sophistication to page design, image manipulation, basic animation techniques, and the<br />

use of style sheets. The course has a strong hands-on component where, in addition to the<br />

software packages used in Web Design I, students will be introduced to DHTML, CSS, and<br />

Flash. Prerequisites: CART 219 or approval of instructor. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

CART 300 Figure Drawing:<br />

Advanced study of drawing with an emphasis on representation of the human figure, exploring<br />

anatomy, proportion, expression, and movement. Prerequisites: CART 214. 3 sem. hrs. 1.5 hrs.<br />

studio/lab per week. 3 crs.<br />

CART 315 Animation History:<br />

A study of historical and contemporary issues in Animation. Prerequisite: ENGL 110. 3 sem.<br />

hrs. 3 crs.<br />

CART 316 Design History:<br />

A study of historical and contemporary issues in Visual Communication Design, Computer<br />

Graphics and Gaming. Prerequisite: ENGL 110. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

CART 320 2D Animation:<br />

A study of animation as a means of storytelling through drawing, narrative and character<br />

development, character and scene design, and sound. Students will explore emotion, expression<br />

and movement in both realistic and stylized drawing of animated shapes and forms, humans,<br />

and animals. Critical analysis and concept development will be emphasized. Prerequisites:<br />

CART 214 and 225. 3 sem. hrs. 1.5 hrs. studio/lab per week. 3 crs.<br />

CART 325 Video:<br />

Further exploration of visual narrative and the moving image utilizing digital video and audio.<br />

The course will cover basic camera techniques, editing, compositing, and visual effects. Critical<br />

analysis and concept development will be emphasized. Prerequisites: CART 240. 3 sem. hrs.<br />

1.5 hrs. studio/lab per week. 3 crs.
