SOCL 246 (CRJU 246) The Death Penalty in America:<br />

This course will discuss the various issues surrounding the death penalty as a punishment<br />

in the United States. Areas covered will include the history of the death penalty and legal<br />

and Constitutional questions. Social, psychological, and philosophical issues will also be<br />

explored. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 249 (BSCH 249) Race, Culture, and Ethnicity:<br />

This course examines the historical development of ethnic and race-based cultural complexes,<br />

the emergence and persistence of stereotypes, the character of ethnic, racial and religious beliefs,<br />

and current problems in groups in American society. There is an emphasis on understanding<br />

individual attitudes and behaviors in relation to the structure of social institutions. 3 sem,<br />

hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 255 (LAWS 255, POLS 255, PSYN 255 ) Managing Human Conflict I:<br />

This course introduces the student to the field of conflict analysis and resolution through the<br />

examination of theory and role play. Major theories of conflict studies are considered and<br />

the student will explore whether these theories are useful in the resolution of conflict. The<br />

student will be introduced to the resolution of conflict. The student will be introduced to the<br />

various forms of conflict resolution such as negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Prerequisite:<br />

SOCL 101 or PSYN 101. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 256 (LAWS 256, POLS 256, PSYN 256) Managing Human Conflict II:<br />

This course continues the study of the theories utilized in conflict resolution. The language<br />

of conflict management will be explored and the active listening skills of the student will be<br />

developed. The theory and application of negotiation will be studied and applied through<br />

role play. Prerequisite: LAWS/PSYN/SOCL/POLS 255. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 261 (BHSC 261, SOWK 261) Computer-Assisted Data Analysis:<br />

This course is designed to teach students how to use statistical computer packages to perform<br />

complex statistical data analyses. Students conduct a study and use statistical packages to<br />

perform and understand complex statistical analyses, e.g., correlation, cross-tabulation, analysis<br />

of variance, multiple regression, and path analysis. Mathematical theory is neither a prerequisite<br />

nor a component of this course. Prerequisite: SOCL 248. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 262 (BHSC 262, CRJU 262, PSYN 262) Alcohol, Drugs and Behavior:<br />

Principles of pharmacology, neural transmission, behavior and psychological assessment will<br />

be discussed. Specific psychopharmacologic issues will be presented with sedative-hypnotic,<br />

benzodiazepine, opiate, stimulant and antipsychotic drugs as primary examples. Other topics<br />

include behavioral toxicology, inhalant drugs, drugs and schoolchildren, nutritional and legal<br />

aspects to drug use, cigarette smoking and the effects of drugs on the developing organism<br />

(e.g., fetal alcohol syndrome). 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 267 (BHSC 267) Strategies for Child Care Providers:<br />

An introduction to the challenges and opportunities involved in the delivery of child care<br />

services in the community and in institutional settings. Emphasis is placed on stimulating<br />

awareness, interest and inquiry into the historical trends, issues, controversies and realities<br />

of providing meaningful programs for substance clients. Attention will be given to the<br />

following issues: Cultural diversity, bioethics, interdisciplinary teams in child care settings,<br />

case management, family relationships, functional assessment, client abuse, and environmental<br />

impact on functional capacity in work with this population. (Previously numbered: SOCL/<br />

BHSC/PSYN 323). 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />

SOCL 269 (BHSC 269, SOWK 269) Strategies for Alcohol/Substance Abuse Providers:<br />

An introduction to the challenges and opportunities involved in the delivery of substance abuse<br />

services in the community and in institutional settings. Emphasis is placed on stimulating<br />
