English<br />
NOTE: Placement in the appropriate level is based on assessment of the high school or<br />
college transcript. Students may elect to take a placement test to determine which English<br />
level is appropriate. Students must take the course designated by the assessment or<br />
placement exam and all subsequent courses in the English composition sequence through<br />
ENGL 112, Written English and Literary Studies II..<br />
ENGL 109 Fundamentals of Exposition:<br />
Introduction to the expository writing process. Students write and revise short essays in the<br />
three required rhetorical modes, based on the analysis of folktales, fairy tales, myths, and<br />
legends. There is a uniform exit examination. 3 sem. hrs. 2 hr. lab per week. 3 crs.<br />
ENGL 110 Elements of Exposition:<br />
Organization, writing, and editing of expository essays in the three required rhetorical modes,<br />
based on the analysis of short fiction. Introduction to the use of basic library reference works.<br />
There is a uniform exit examination. 3 sem. hrs. 2 hr.lab per week, 3 crs.<br />
ENGL 111 Written English and Literary Studies I:<br />
The writing of expository prose based on drama. Students read and analyze representative<br />
plays and write essays on assigned topics. Introduction to critical essays and research methods.<br />
There is a uniform exit examination. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
ENGL 112 Written English and Literary Studies II:<br />
Critical analysis of fiction and poetry. Students read and analyze major literary works and<br />
compose a full-length research paper on an assigned topic. There is a uniform exit exam.<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 111. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />
The Learning Centers at <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> provide students with individual assistance in writing. The<br />
writing tutors at the Learning Centers are professional instructors, and their help is provided free of<br />
charge for all registered students. Currently, Learning Centers are operating at the Dobbs Ferry,<br />
Bronx, Manhattan, Yorktown, and White Plains campuses, and at every extension center.<br />
ENGL191 Honors English I:<br />
A close reading of selected literary texts that have interpreted human experience through a<br />
variety of worldviews. Includes field trips to museums and other cultural events. Development<br />
of skills in the writing of expository prose including the research paper. May replace general<br />
education requirement ENGL 111 or ENGL112. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
ENGL192 Honors English II:<br />
Further readings of masterpieces of Western culture from the Renaissance to the present.<br />
Includes field trips to museums, concerts, plays and lectures. Admission by permission of<br />
instructor. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
ENGL 112 is a prerequisite for all English courses numbered 200 and above.<br />
ENGL 200 Poetics: Introduction to Literary Texts:<br />
An analysis of literary texts. Students examine the use of words, images, metaphors and<br />
symbols to create the structures basic to the verbal imagination. English majors should take<br />
this course as early as possible. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
ENGL 205 Survey of English Literature I:<br />
A survey of the traditions in structure and content that shaped English literature from the Old<br />
English period through Milton. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.
