Communication Disorders<br />
CMDS 210 Clinical Process I:<br />
An introduction to the clinical process that focuses on supervised observations and issues<br />
relating to the clinical experience. 3 sem. hrs. 2 hr. lect., 1 hr. clinic lab. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 215 Clinical Process II:<br />
Continuation of the clinical process that focuses on clinical assessment and therapeutic<br />
methods, report writing, and the clinician-client relationship. Prerequisite: CMDS 210. 3 sem.<br />
hrs. 2 hr. lect., 1 hr. clinic lab. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 220 Multicultural Issues in Communication Disorders:<br />
This course addresses the impact of cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity on communication<br />
development, communication patterns, and communication disorders. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 230 (SPCM 230) Voice and Diction<br />
Study and practice of the skills needed for control of voice production and diction, (articulation,<br />
pronunciation, intonation, prosody). Emphasis will be placed on phonetics and ear training.<br />
Tape recordings will be used for evaluation and study. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 240 Phonetics:<br />
Detailed analysis of the production of the sounds of the English language; basic intonation<br />
patterns and linguistic rules; extensive practice in phonetic transcription with emphasis on<br />
ear training. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 256 Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing Mechanisms:<br />
Structure and function of the speech mechanism; muscular and neural control of the speech<br />
organs; respiration, phonation, resonation and articulation. (With Cadaver) Prerequisite: BIOL<br />

Anatomy and physiology of the ear; acoustics; ear pathologies; audiologic evaluation;<br />

CMDS 258 Introduction to Communication Disorders:<br />
An introduction to the study of articulation, voice and rhythm disorders and the anatomy<br />
and physiology that relate to these disorders. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 264 (PSYN 264) Normal Speech and Language Development:<br />
A study of normal language development including phonological, morphological, syntactic,<br />
semantic, and pragmatic features; exploration of the cognitive linguistic communicative<br />

CMDS 270 Speech and Hearing Science:<br />
A study of the psychological and acoustical aspects of speech production and perception;<br />
principles of the physics of sound; psychoacoustics and acoustic phonetics. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CMDS 300 (PSYN 300) Language Disorders:<br />
The nature of language disorders relative to normal speech and language development and<br />
the impact on the ability to communicate in the environment. Prerequisite: CMDS 264. 3 sem.<br />

CMDS 310 Communication Disorders — Organic:<br />
A study of speech disorders caused by physical disability with special attention given to<br />
problems associated with cleft palate, cerebral palsy, aphasia, and organically based voice<br />
disorders. Prerequisites: CMDS 256; CMDS 258. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.
