CHSC/CRJU 140 Introduction to Homeland Security, Public Safety and Terrorism:<br />
This course introduces the organizational and programmatic initiatives for domestic security in<br />
the post 9/11 world. Topics include an overview of the terrorist threat; chemical, biological, and<br />
nuclear hazards; public safety and security; statutory authority; and measures for mitigation,<br />
preparedness, response and recovery. The course also explores the types and levels of impact<br />
that these developments have upon the national, local community, and corporate psyches of<br />
America. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs.<br />
CHSC/ECON/SOCL 230 Ethics: The Corporate Community in Society:<br />
A discussion of general ethical concepts and issues in society and the role ethics plays in<br />
business. The course examines the ethical responsibilities of the corporate entity to local,<br />
national, and global communities and explores the micro and macro cultural effects that Western<br />
democratic business practices have upon these communities. Legal versus ethical issues of<br />
truthfulness in accounting, fair play, collaboration and competition between corporations, as<br />
well as ethical matters between co-workers, are analyzed. Ethical codes of conduct applicable<br />
to non-management positions, mid-level through executive management positions, and Human<br />
Resources departments are studied for their importance to the corporate identity. Prerequisite:<br />
SOCL101, or with approval from program director. 3 sem. hrs., 3 crs.<br />
CHSC/MGMT 235 Foundations of Risk Management:<br />
An introduction to fundamental probability and theoretical concepts of risk as it pertains to<br />
public and private sector environment. This course is designed to familiarize the student<br />
with identifying and responding to various risks, threats and vulnerabilities in the context<br />
of theoretical and real world scenarios. The course will explore proactive and reactive risk<br />
management theories as well as identification of and response to different levels of crisis.<br />
Prerequisite: MATH115. 3 sem. hrs., 3 crs.<br />
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />
CHSC 245 Legal Aspects of Security Management:<br />
An analysis of current federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to security<br />
management. Discusses the powers of private security in regard to arrest, detention and<br />
interrogation, the duty to protect from third party crime, and the power and limits of civil<br />
tort law. The goals and objectives of corporate policies and procedures are examined in the<br />
context of the legal requirements of criminal justice procedure, contract law, administrative<br />
law and federal employment law. 3 sem. hrs., 3 crs.<br />
CHSC/FINC 300 Budget Analysis and Preparation:<br />
Designed for CHSC majors only, this course examines the relationship between an organization’s<br />
resources and its mission. Topics include capital and operating budget concepts, government<br />
versus private sector budget processes, and developing and analyzing budgets so as to produce<br />
spending plans that are compatible with the organization’s philosophy, goals and financial<br />
state. Prerequisite: MATH 115. 3 sem. hrs., 3 crs.<br />
CHSC 310 Information Assurance and Control Systems: Protection:<br />
This course will introduce students to Information System threats and vulnerabilities as well as<br />
the techniques used to protect the system proactively from both internal and external threats.<br />
It will review software and hardware products for system security. Students will complete<br />
hands-on assignments for testing and evaluating various techniques. Prerequisites: MATH<br />
116, MATH/CISC 120, CISC 257, or with approval from program director. 3 sem. hrs., 3 crs.<br />
CHSC 315 (SOCL 315) Terrorism<br />
This course provides a comprehensive exploration of contemporary terrorism. It focuses on<br />
the theories and cases related to the causes, perpetration, and results of terrorist activities.<br />
It includes an analysis of religious terrorism, ideological terrorism, gender-focused political<br />
violence, criminal enterprises and terrorist violence. Among the specific issues to be covered<br />
are the changing definitions and perceptions of terrorism; the origins of terrorism; the impact<br />
of terrorism upon community and media; tactics and targets; and the major scholarly issues<br />
in the field of terrorism. Prerequisite: CHSC 140, or with approval from program director. 3<br />
sem. hrs., 3 crs.
