NURS 365 Introduction to Health Policy:<br />

This course provides an overview of health policy and health economics. The legislative<br />

process and its impact on the development of policy at the local, state and national level will be<br />

discussed. Health economics are explored through discussions of financing. Students examine<br />

public and private payers both for profit and not for profit. Uninsured and underinsured<br />

as well as impact of social class and culture as examined. International health policy and<br />

economics are discussed as a point of comparison and contrast. Key health policy issues are<br />

explored. Prerequisite: NURS 361, 362, 363, 364. 3 hrs. lect; 3 crs.<br />

NURS 366 Leadership and Management:<br />

This course examines leadership concepts in the health care delivery system. Theories regarding<br />

leadership, management, power, chaos, change, influence, delegation, communication and<br />

empowerment are analyzed. Strategies for effective multidisciplinary collaboration are<br />

explored. Learning activities are directed toward the professional nurse’s development in<br />

developing their power and expanding one’s sphere of influence. Prerequisite: NURS 361, 362,<br />

363, 364. 3 hrs. lect.; 3 crs.<br />

NURS 367 Pathophysiology and Clinical Reasoning for Nursing:<br />

Basic principles and processes are introduced early in the course, including descriptions of<br />

cellular biology; genes and genetic diseases; forms of cell injuries; fluids and electrolytes and<br />

acids and bases; immunity; and tumor biology. Knowledge of these processes is applied to<br />

the pathophysiology of common diseases. The presentation of each disease/disorder entity<br />

includes relevant risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and a brief review of<br />

treatment. Clinical reasoning will be augmented by applying models for nursing clinical<br />

judgment to clinical case studies. Prerequisite: BIO 130, BIO 265. 3 hrs. lect; 3 crs.<br />

NURS 368 Health Assessment and Health Promotion:<br />

This course focuses on health assessment and health promotion. Students will develop the<br />

health assessment skills necessary for professional nursing practice. Weekly readings allow<br />

the student to synthesize theory and practice. Health promotion and disease prevention<br />

strategies are analyzed for use with various populations. Barriers to health communication are<br />

explored and students examine the issues that affect health behaviors. Case study methods<br />

are used. 3hrs. lect.; 3 crs.<br />

NURS 369 Community Health Nursing: A Global Perspective:<br />

This course addresses issues of health at local, national and international levels. Global health<br />

trends and patterns in health are discussed. Health problems and health promotion for<br />

various aggregate groups at the local, national and international level are explored. Prerequisite:<br />

NURS 361, 362, 363, 365. 3 hrs. lect.; 3 crs.<br />

NURS 370 Capstone Project in Nursing and Health Care:<br />

Students will prepare a mini-research proposal consisting of an introduction to the problem,<br />

background and significance of the problem and an annotated bibliography of 10 peer-reviewed<br />

journal articles ( APA format) written in the last 5 years. The student’s area of interest must be<br />

related to nursing or health care issues. The student’s proposed research topic will be reviewed<br />

and approved by nursing faculty. 3 crs. Prerequisite: All undergraduate nursing courses and<br />

completion of all general education courses or permission of the nursing programs director.<br />

NURS 371Statistics for Nurses:<br />

This course is an introduction to statistics for nurses. Students explore different statistical<br />

procedures and how to summarize and present data. Students also critique research studies<br />

for statistical methods employed as they relate to relate to professional nursing practices.<br />

Prerequisite or Co-Requisite: Math 116. 3 crs
