The art of lighting the oldest bridge in Paris
Pont-Neuf, never rebuilt owing to its robustness, is the oldest bridge in Paris. It has retained its original
name, given spontaneously when it was built in 1578. Designed by Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau, architect
of Henri III, Pont-Neuf is an asymmetrical structure, made up of two bridges which connect the branches of
the Seine at the west end of Île de la Cité. The first stone bridge not having houses at the side, and offering
pavements to give pedestrians a clean, safe footpath. 385 masks, gargoyles or grimacing caricatures are
sculpted on its cornices. This showpiece of urban planning is today on the Unesco’s world heritage list.
