Briare
Illumination and elegance for the Briare canal aqueduct
During the creation of the Briare canal in the Loire (1827-1838), a stone canal aqueduct was planned to
allow the Loire to be crossed, but the semi-circular arches would have restricted the river’s eventual floods.
It was the technology of mild steel which allowed, 50 years later, this metal canal aqueduct with large
openings to be realised. Until 2003, it remained the longest in the world with its 662 meters. Designed by
Léonce-Abel Mazoyer and Charles Sigault, it benefits from the expertise of Gustave Eiffel and Daydé & Pillé.
Two ornamental statues with Briare luminaires mark out each end, reminding of the Alexandre III bridge
in Paris.
