Henri IV
An original square of Paris
Pont-Neuf square is famous for its equestrian statue of King Henri IV, the first version of which was
inaugurated in 1614, four years after he was assassinated. Melted down in 1792 to make cannons during
the French Revolution, it was replaced by a new statue, inspired by the original. Located in the west end of
Île de la Cité, one of the first districts in the creation of Paris, this square is found in the centre of Pont-Neuf
and overlooks the small public garden of Vert-Galant.
