Procedures: Control<br />
Non-chemical Control<br />
An additional option is available for growers who wish to plant a<br />
non-host crop on an infested field without having to plant a resistant<br />
potato variety for two (2) years. With this option, the grower applies a<br />
single application of a registered fumigant at the legal dosage rate to<br />
the regulated property. The planting of potatoes or other host crops on<br />
this field is still prohibited.<br />
Steam Treatment<br />
Steam heat treatments can be performed at farm or warehouse<br />
locations. Steam treatment takes 1 hour and commodities can be<br />
released to the owner immediately after steam treatment. Steam<br />
treatment is not harmful to the environment and is noncorrovsive. No<br />
special precautions are necessary for the transportation of steam<br />
treatment equipment.<br />
The following items can be treated with steam heat before moving<br />
interstate from any regulated area:<br />

Tarpaulin or Tent<br />
Steam treatment is not recommended for equipment or vehicles with<br />
cabs due to possible damage to electrical or plastic components.<br />
Steam heat treatment T406-d, Steam at NAP, tarpaulin or tent, used<br />
farm equipment without cabs, construction equipment without cabs,<br />
and used containers must be conducted under the following minimum<br />
ambient air temperatures, which vary with the volume of the<br />
treatment enclosure:<br />
1. Determine if the following temperature and volume requirements<br />
can be met:<br />
A. If the treatment enclosure is 4,000 ft 3 , then the minimum air<br />
temperature is 40°F.<br />
B. If the treatment enclosure is greater than 4,000 ft and less<br />
than or equal to 6,000 ft , then the minimum air temperature<br />
is 60°F.<br />
C. If the enclosure is greater than 6,000 ft 3 , then this treatment<br />
is not recommended.<br />
If you cannot meet the temperature and enclosure volume requirements, then<br />
do not use this treatment.<br />
Important<br />
Use only a steam generator approved by APHIS.<br />
