Sample Wash Room<br />
Step 5: Wash the Mineral Soil Samples<br />
The steps below are for washing mineral soil samples only.<br />
Wash mineral soil samples as follows:<br />
1. Turn the low water on so there will be a little water in the<br />
Fenwick can. See the large tank on the right in Figure 2-4-8<br />
below.<br />
2. Open a soil sample bag; and slowly dump the soil into the<br />
Fenwick can.<br />
3. Throw the empty sample bag into the trash can.<br />
4. Turn the water on high; this roils and stirs the soil.<br />

5. Allow the high water to flow just up to the lip of the tank, then<br />
turn the high water off; this brings the soil up and gets<br />
everything to the top of the tank.<br />
6. Keep the low water flowing all through the washing process.<br />
7. As the debris comes up to the top of the tank, carefully hose and<br />
skim the larger debris from the tank into the top sieve (No. 20).<br />
