Survey Preparation<br />
Tractor Operator<br />
Responsibilities<br />
Mechanical surveys are conducted by tractor operators. The tractor<br />
operator’s responsibilities include the following:<br />
1. Review the survey map with the PPQ-PHSS or PPQ Technician,<br />
and discuss the survey conditions and where to park.<br />
2. Daily, know where you are going to sample and post the<br />
sampling location on the schedule board.<br />
3. Daily, make sure you have all equipment and supplies for daily<br />
operation. Ensure that tools are not misplaced during the<br />
workday.<br />
A. Check the tool box assigned to your tractor each morning<br />
before departing for the sampling location.<br />
B. Check the tool box assigned to your tractor at the end of the<br />
day with your supervisor.<br />
C. Remove the tool box and tools from your tractor, and store in<br />
the tractor shed as directed. Do not leave tools on the tractor<br />
overnight.<br />
D. When samples are taken to the rack room, make sure the<br />
storage rack sheets are filled out.<br />
4. Follow tractor operation and maintenance guidelines. As a<br />
tractor operator, you are responsible for the safe operation and<br />
routine maintenance of the equipment assigned to you.<br />
A. First day of each week:<br />
i. Check the oil level; and if needed, add oil.<br />
ii. Check the transmission fluid; and if needed, add fluid.<br />
iii. If applicable, check the battery fluid level.<br />
B. Daily:<br />
i. Check the oil level; and fill as needed.<br />
ii. Check the gas level; and add gas while the tank is cold<br />
and the engine is off.<br />
iii. Check the trailer tires, tie-downs, and lights, and secure<br />
the safety chain to be sure all are in working order.<br />
5. Operate the tractor safely.<br />
A. Keep the tractor a a speed low enough to prevent bouncing.<br />
B. Do not attempt sharp turns at high speed.<br />
C. When driving the tractor on a highway, lock the brakes<br />
together.<br />
D. Use flashers and lights on roads and highways.<br />
E. Use farm roads to enter and leave the fields.<br />
