Through a variety of printed and audiovisual
media, CIMMYT's communications program
reaches around the world to stimulate the
exchange of information about maize and
wheat.
Two key audiences are linked by these
services, (1) agronomic scientists and technicians
on every continent, and (2) maize and
wheat farmers, who are urged to adopt the
most economical and productive practices.
As broad as these services are at present
(Table C1), CIMMYT has scarcely tapped the
range of potential services open to it as an
international clearing house and "data center".
Too often, agricultural scientists in developing
nations are severely hampered by lack
of access to the vast scientific literature generated
in the "developed" countries. In addition
there is inadequate exchange of knowledge
among the growing number of capable
scientists in the developing nations. Thus, millions
of dollars in research expenditures are
misdirected annually. due to inadequate knowledge
of existing research and the difficult task
of literature search with present retrieval capabilities.
CIMMYT and cooperating institutions
make an important contribution in establishing
information linkages to prevent these
communications breakdowns.
