the principal lines currently included in the<br />
Crossing Block and Durum Screening Nursery.<br />
From these experiments the dangers inherent<br />
in the current situation become very apparent.<br />
Many lines that are apparently resistant in the<br />
field are highly susceptible in the seedling<br />
stage to one or more of the races, especially<br />
to race 15-2, 3, 4, 7. On the other hand, some<br />
of the lines from the Crossing Block and·<br />
Screening Nursery combine resistance in both<br />
the seedling and adult stages.<br />
Attempts are now underway to identify<br />
durum lines and varieties which are completely<br />
susceptible in the seedling stage, but carry<br />
genes that condition resistance in the adult<br />
stage. To date, in preliminary tests, five different<br />
lines originating from two different<br />
crosses, have been identified as carrying this<br />
type of resistance (Table W11).<br />
