3.8 MAGNETIZATION FOR FLUX LEAKAGE TESTING<br />

For flux leakage testing to be effective, ferromagnetic parts must be<br />

magnetized to saturation. To understand how leakage flux fields are<br />

established and measured, we must have an understanding of basic<br />

magnetic fields and magnetism. As previously stated, magnetic fields flow<br />

through and surround permanent magnets. Magnetic lines of flux exit the<br />

north pole of a magnet and enter the south pole. Throughout this text, the<br />

units of flux density will be given in centimeter gram second (cgs) units or<br />

gauss (G). A conversion table for cgs and Système International (SI) are<br />

given in Table 3.1.<br />
