Redressing consists of removing the damaged material by turning and finish grinding. Finish grinding introduces a minimum amount of stress. Eddy current testing techniques are then used to verify that the microcracks have been removed. The redressed roll can then be heat treated and quenched to restore the proper case hardening. The magnetoelastic technique involves the generation of Barkhausen noise (BN) that can be used to provide a fast, nondestructive evaluation of the new and used rolls in both static and dynamic tests. BN can be generated by a controlled magnetic field and detected by an electromagnetic probe.The average amplitude of the generated BN is proportional to the residual tensile stresses in the ferromagnetic materials. This technique has been found to be extremely useful in detecting grinding burns on injector lobes of diesel engine camshafts. Abusive grinding after final machining creates camshaft burns.
