3.13 INSTITUT DR. FOERSTER<br />

Institut Dr. Foerster specializes in eddy current testing and magnetic flux<br />

leakage testing for longitudinal and transverse flaws in wires, bars, pipe, and<br />

tubing. The eddy current principles used with virtually all stages of wire and<br />

bar production are shown in Figure 3.32.Through-type encircling coils (upper<br />

left) are typically used to detect crack and hole-type flaws in the longitudinal<br />

direction. Longitudinal magnetic fields (upper right) enable differential<br />

through-type coils to be used for detecting holes and transverse cracks as<br />

well as estimating the depth of longitudinal flaws.<br />

Likewise, probes with small focal active areas (lower left) are frequently used<br />

to scan and determine surface finish on semi finished products. Finally, one<br />

or more rotating sensors (lower right) set up a circular flux pattern on the test<br />

surface and can be used to determine the severity of surface defects.<br />
