Permanent magnets are the preferred method for magnetizing wire rope
because they have a constant magnetic field and do not require a flowing
magnetic current. Frequently, the number of broken wires can be determined.
However, in cases where there are overlaps or inside breaks the number of
broken wires cannot be determined. The leakage flux method can also be
used to determine the radial location of wire breaks by using two different
diameter search coils, with different depths of penetration. Finally, the
detection of consecutive wire breaks depends on the frequency response of
the recorder and rope speed.
