3.19.4 Probe Design Standard ACFM probes contain both a field induction coil and magnetic field (voltage) sensor in a single probe head and multiple conductor cable. Probes are typically designed for specific applications, such as a “standard weld probe.” Probe design is optimized to follow a toe weld and reduce probe noise caused by probe movement.With toe welds, a standard weld inspection would require two probe scans, one for each toe. Welds up to 20mm wide can be scanned this way. Because of the positional sensitivity of pencil-style probes, they should be used only in applications requiring pencil probes to gain access. For the various applications, the manufacturer’s instruction manuals and recommended company test procedures should be consulted and followed. Charlie Chong/ Fion Zhang
