3.15.3 General Flux Leakage Applications
The main advantage of the flux leakage method over the eddy current method
of flaw detection is that the flux leakage method has a much higher signalonoise
ratio for even small flaws on rough surfaces. This greater inherent
signalto- noise ratio is due to the nature of signal generation that occurs when
the flux sensors cut the magnetic lines of leakage flux. Signals from inner and
outer surfaces differ in both phase and amplitude. Continuous spectrum
analyzers can be used to separate signals and direct them to different
channels where they are filtered and detected with threshold discriminators.
