3.19 ALTERNATING CURRENT FIELD MEASUREMENT (ACFM) This is a relatively new method originally developed for the undersea inspection of offshore platform piping and structures. The method has been found to be useful in providing an early warning of service life structural integrity problems so that corrective action can be taken prior to catastrophic failure. The ACFM method can reliably locate surface cracks and determine the extent of cracking without removing paint and other coatings.This means that paint and other coatings do not have to be removed and replaced later. This also means that special scaffolding and other structures do not have to be assembled beforehand and disassembled after these operations. This usually results in substantial cost savings. One advantage of the ACFM method is that it can be used underwater or in normal work environments by relatively unskilled operators. Charlie Chong/ Fion Zhang
