Figure 3.19 shows an encircling coil arrangement with excitation coil and<br />

differential pickup coil. In this case, the circular or tubular test material is<br />

passed through the test coil arrangement. A large outer coil induces a<br />

magnetic field in the test material that in turn sets up circular eddy currents<br />

near the material’s surface. A smaller diameter differential pickup coil is<br />

located inside the larger excitation coil. The differential coil detects the<br />

complex amplitude-phase changes caused by the crack while providing self<br />

compensation for eccentricity and other non-relevant indications.<br />
