All of the fine magnetic particles near the magnets are drawn to the pole<br />

pieces and sharp edges of the magnets where leakage flux is strongest. At a<br />

greater distance, the circular nature of the magnetic lines of force can be<br />

more easily seen. The pattern for the horseshoe magnet shows weaker poles<br />

near the back curved portion of the magnet. The weaker poles were probably<br />

created as a result of the magnetizing technique used to initially magnetize<br />

the ferromagnetic material. The ideal permanent magnet should be easy to<br />

magnetize and hard to demagnetize. The ideal ferromagnetic test piece,<br />

inspected with flux leakage equipment, should be easy to magnetize and<br />

demagnetize. In practice, these ideal relationships are hard to achieve.<br />
