Chapter6. Search Planning and Coverage6This chapter will cover factors that are unique to SAR/DR mission planning.Planning considerations and techniques used in both visual and electronic searchmissions are included. The incident commander and his general staff performmuch of the planning. However, all crewmembers are expected to understand theplanning concepts. This comprehension allows more precise missionperformance, and increases flexibility to effectively deal with changingcircumstances. Much of this information is contained in the U.S. National SARSupplement to the International Aeronautical and Maritime SAR Manual.Some of the topics included in this chapter were covered in the MissionScanner course. They are not included in the objectives but are reproduced herefor review purposes.OBJECTIVES:1. In basic terms, discuss how search planners determine the MaximumArea of Possibility and then the Probability Area.{O & P; 6.2.1 & 6.2.2}2. Given a POD table, discuss the advantages and disadvantages ofvarious search altitudes and speeds over the three major types ofterrain.{O & P; 6.2.3}3. Discuss the importance of proper execution of search patterns.{O & P; 6.2.4}99
