Plans were developed bydistricts and state office to increasethe rate at which training anddevelopment can be offered toschools during 1998.The School Support Document, thethird element in the Training andDevelopment Resource, addressesteachers’ requests as a source ofinformation, including a series ofhistorical readings.A copy of Bringing Them Home,the community guide presentedwith the report of the NationalInquiry into the Separation ofAboriginal and Torres StraitIslander Children from TheirFamilies will be distributed toevery school. A FAIR GO FOR ALLAboriginal LiteracyStrategyAn Aboriginal Education LiteracyStrategy is being developed to buildon the provisions of the StateLiteracy Strategy. The strategy willtarget Aboriginal students frompreschool to Year 9. The proposedbudget is $3.5m over the next twoyears.Literacy support targeting theAboriginal community included:• training of AboriginalEducation Assistants to gain abetter understanding of theliteracy program and to workwith families in strengtheningschool and home literacypractices• transition and kindergartenorientation programs and playgroups run by schoolcommunities• the development of specialistreading materials and cassettetapes.The Aboriginal Early LanguageDevelopment Program (AELDP)operates in 23 schools across thestate. The program operates fromK-2 or K-6 depending on thecircumstances. The aim of theprogram is to develop the languageskills of Aboriginal studentsthrough the implementationof relevant teaching strategies,appropriate resources andculturally relevant programs.Review of AboriginalPre-schoolsThe eight DSE pre-schools inAboriginal communities werereviewed in 1997. Each of the eightpre-schools and the associatedprimary schools were visited andstaff were interviewed to determineeffectiveness of the pre-school.The report will be finalised in1998.DSE Annual Report 1997 81
