At present, Paddy production isnearly at the level of self sufficiency.The national food production drive "ApiWawamu Rata Nagamu" programme, thefertilizer subsidy and re-cultivation ofabandoned paddy lands particularly in theNorth and Eastern Province have largelycontributed to the sharp growth in paddy.The producer price of paddy in 2010 is inthe range of Rs. 28-30 per kilo gram, whichis 80 percent increase over 2005.The average annual production of maize hasincreased from 41,804 metric tons in 2005 to161,694 metric tons in 2010. The Maizeproduction is sufficient to meet about 60percent of the domestic requirement, for thefirst time in the decade. About 57,618 hawere under maize cultivation by 2010.The average annual production of big onionhas increased from 50,400 metric tons in2005 to 58,930 metric tons in 2010. Theaverage annual production of red onion hasincreased from 53,729 metric tons in 2005 to61,811 metric tons in 2010.About 100,148 hectares and 50,000 hectaresare under fruit and vegetable cultivationrespectively. The volume of fruit exportsincreased from 6,566 metric tons in 2005 to13,766 metric tons in 2010. The volume ofvegetables exported increased from 14,071metric tons in 2005 to 21,026 metric tons in2010. The value of exports of fruits andvegetables increased from Rs.1, 762 millionin 2005 to Rs. 2,341 million in 2010.About 80,000 hectares are under exportagricultural crop cultivation.
