The objective <strong>of</strong> thisproject is to increase the student enrolmentincluding students from rural areas by176establishing 40 National Online DistanceEducation Service (NODES) <strong>and</strong> AccessCentres (NACs) to follow online courses.Infrastructure developments in universitieswere further exp<strong>and</strong>ed in order to provideenhanced facilities for students. In <strong>2010</strong>,more than 125 construction projects wereimplemented at universities for theimprovement <strong>of</strong> infrastructure facilities.The following tasks were undertaken bythe Department in relation to the HigherEducation Sector; Prepared the related sectoral chaptersfor “The Emerging Wonder <strong>of</strong> Asia –Mahinda Chinthana Vision for theFuture. Prepared a report on sectoralperformance for the Annual <strong>Report</strong> 2009<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Finance</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Planning</strong>. Updated the project pipeline for theperiod <strong>2010</strong> – 2012 incorporating newproposals submitted by the <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>and</strong>line agency. Prepared Progress <strong>Report</strong>s relating toon-goingdevelopmentprojects/programmes. Provided necessary technical assistancefor the “Dayata Kirula Exhibition” The division appraised 20 projectproposals <strong>and</strong> submitted observations on23 Cabinet Memor<strong>and</strong>a submitted by theline <strong>Ministry</strong>.Technology Education <strong>and</strong> SkillsDevelopmentCurrently the state sector plays the keyrole in providing skills training, as in thecase <strong>of</strong> the formal education sector in SriLanka. Different institutions under the<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> Youth Affairs <strong>and</strong> SkillsDevelopment are mainly responsible forconducting skills development training
