The education policy <strong>of</strong> the Governmentaims at creating a knowledge-based society,with required skills to face the emergingchallenges in society. It recognizes thenecessity <strong>of</strong> promoting equity <strong>and</strong> enhancingquality <strong>and</strong> the relevance <strong>of</strong> education, whileimproving the governance in servicedelivery. The policy also aims at promotingvalues <strong>and</strong> attitudes needed by individuals tolive in peace <strong>and</strong> harmony. This initiativewill help to develop Sri Lanka as adestination for investments in education <strong>and</strong>position the nation as a centre <strong>of</strong> excellence<strong>and</strong> regional hub for learning <strong>and</strong> innovation.Further, development <strong>of</strong> our educationsystem is vital for this purpose. The schoolsystem now needs substantial modernizationto lay the foundation for a knowledge hub.Accordingly, the existing schools network <strong>of</strong>the country need to be modernized withfacilities, such as water <strong>and</strong> sanitation, childfriendly class rooms, modern libraries,science laboratories <strong>and</strong> sport facilities. TheGovernment has planned to develop 1,000existing schools as high performing nuclearschools throughout the country <strong>and</strong> affiliateseveral distance schools to these nuclearcentres to minimize the high dem<strong>and</strong> fornuclear schools located in the urban areas.These schools will provide high qualitytraining in key subjects such as Science,English, ICT <strong>and</strong> Sports. This is designed toeliminate the regional disparities in theeducation system <strong>and</strong> create positive benefitsfor children.Given the increasing economic globalization<strong>and</strong> the emergence <strong>of</strong> information <strong>and</strong>knowledge based economic systems <strong>and</strong> lifestyles, the educational needs at all levels havechanged all around the world. Thistransformation has posed new challenges forthe Sri Lankan education system too.The education content <strong>and</strong> teachingmethods should become morecompetency based, life oriented <strong>and</strong>applied to current <strong>and</strong> future needs. Limited Access to Science, Maths,English <strong>and</strong> IT education-Pass rates at O-level <strong>and</strong> A-level in science, mathematics<strong>and</strong> English are lower than average acrossSri Lanka.169
