During the 2005-<strong>2010</strong> period five majorflyovers at Kelaniya, Nugegoda, Dehiwala,Orugodawaththa, <strong>and</strong> Pannipitiya have beencompleted <strong>and</strong> the investment in construction<strong>of</strong> bridges <strong>and</strong> flyovers has increased Rs. 323million in 2005 to 3,722 million in <strong>2010</strong>.In line with its vision the Department <strong>of</strong>National <strong>Planning</strong> gave its contribution toimplement several activities;We appraised 16 new project proposals,submitted observation on 18 cabinetmemor<strong>and</strong>ums, contributed to prepare the SriLanka The Emerging Wonder <strong>of</strong> AsiaMahinda Chinthana vision document <strong>and</strong>participated in 26 meetings related to the roadsector. Of the total number <strong>of</strong> 31,000buses in the country, 26,500 are privatelyowned. Of this, around 4,000 private buseswere used for inter provincial passengertransport <strong>and</strong> another 18,000 private busesare used for intra provincial services. Thetransport sector has a prominent place in thefive hubs mentioned in the ManindaChinthana Development Policy Frameworkdocument. The review <strong>of</strong> the transport sectorperformance is undertake to consider whetherthe sector has the capability <strong>and</strong> is bestarranged to implement the transport strategy<strong>and</strong> to consider ways to enhance sectorperformance in the future.
