Demons<strong>The</strong> most eye-catching image in this cave is the painting <strong>of</strong> two blackdemons with flames (II.1, III’.1). 38 Figures 8 and 9 show painting No. II.1.II.1Figure 8(Picture taken by the author)<strong>The</strong>se demons are holding sticks (?) in their hands, and large flames arecoming up from their heads (mouths?). Unfortunately no inscription isretained in the cartouche, 39 but this is a peculiar image that is hard tointerpret without referring to the following passages: 40<strong>The</strong>n at the tip <strong>of</strong> the flames there are five yak≈as holding sharpswords in their hands. <strong>The</strong>y have four mouths in their heads,and, inhaling the fire, they run.
