Asano: Idea <strong>of</strong> Last Dharma-age in Shinran’s Thought 211extant letters that he was receiving many visits by his followers from thenorthern regions who came to ask him a myriad <strong>of</strong> questions. He was alsoconcerned about the heretical ideas that were being spread by his eldestson, Zenran. As these troubles became compounded, however, the salvation<strong>of</strong> Amida was manifested to him in the form <strong>of</strong> a declaration in adream, and with a content consistent with the assertions that had had beenmaking every day. This could be seen as virtually incontrovertible pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>the working <strong>of</strong> Amida’s salvific activity in this life. That being the case, wecan recognize that Shinran recorded the date <strong>of</strong> the dream with great care.Shinran describes salvation through Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow inthe following way,18. Of the Vows embraced as supreme and all-surpassing,Selected through five kalpa-s <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ound thought,<strong>The</strong> Vows <strong>of</strong> immeasurable light and lifeWere made the foundation <strong>of</strong> the working <strong>of</strong> great compassion. 4437. When we reflect on the establishment <strong>of</strong> the Vow,We find that the Tathågata, without abandoningsentient beings in pain and affliction,Has taken the directing <strong>of</strong> virtue to them as foremost,Thus fulfilling the mind <strong>of</strong> great compassion. 4552. Amida, AvalokiteΩvara, and MahåsthåmapråptaRide on the ship <strong>of</strong> the great Vow;Going out on the ocean <strong>of</strong> birth-and-death,<strong>The</strong>y call to beings and bring them on board. 4631. <strong>The</strong> Buddha <strong>of</strong> Unhindered Light declared:“To benefit the sentient beings <strong>of</strong> the future,I entrust the nembutsu <strong>of</strong> wisdomTo Bodhisattva Mahåståmapråpta.” 4748. Casting <strong>of</strong>f the pain <strong>of</strong> birth-and-death since thebeginningless past,We are certain <strong>of</strong> attaining supreme nirvana.This is through Amida’s directing <strong>of</strong> virtue forgoing forth and returning;Our gratitude for the Buddha’s benevolence istruly hard to fulfill. 4850. <strong>The</strong> directing <strong>of</strong> virtue embodied in Namu-amida-butsuIs, in its benevolent working, vast and inconceivable;
