Shinransystemized and explicated the teachings and practice <strong>of</strong> Pure LandBuddhism inherited from its origins in India and China, andfurther enhanced the Pure Land teachings by presenting the law <strong>of</strong>salvation through the “Other Power” <strong>of</strong> Amida Buddha as theultimate teaching <strong>of</strong> the Mahayana. <strong>The</strong> Kyogyoshinsho is a collection<strong>of</strong> 376 quotations from sixty-two scriptures, discourses, andcommentaries including non-<strong>Buddhist</strong> sources, with Shinran’snotes and commentary serving as introductions to the quotedmaterial and summation and further explication <strong>of</strong> its main points.<strong>The</strong> translator has provided paragraph divisions and subheadingsto further aid the reader, and an extensive glossary <strong>of</strong> terms andconcepts essential to Pure Land doctrine.Two Nichiren TextsRisshoankokuron and Kanjinhonzonsho[Taisho 2688 & 2692]This volume includes two texts by Nichiren (1222–1282), founder<strong>of</strong> the Nichiren sect <strong>of</strong> Japanese Buddhism. <strong>The</strong> Risshoankokuron,or “<strong>The</strong> Treatise on the Establishment <strong>of</strong> the Orthodox Teachingand the Peace <strong>of</strong> the Nation,” was written in 1260 as an appeal to
