He studied Economicsand <strong>La</strong>w (earning his PhD in the latter) from1962 to 1971 at Münster, <strong>La</strong>usanne and ParisUniversities, in addition to pursuing a HarvardBusiness School PMD.From 1971 to 1986 he held various functionswithin the Saint-Gobain Group, lastly thoseof Executive Committee Chairman for VereinigteGlaswerke GmbH and Deputy ManagingDirector of Compagnie de Saint-Gobain forthe Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1986,Gerhard Cromme has been Chairman of theManagement Board of Krupp Stahl AG, Chairmanof the Management Board of Fried.Krupp AGHoesch-Krupp, Chairman of the ManagementBoard of ThyssenKrupp AG and Chairman ofthe Supervisory Board of ThyssenKrupp AG,a function he holds since 1 October 2001.Gerhard Cromme is the Chairman of the GermanGovernmental Commission on CorporateGovernance and of the European Round Tableof Industrialists. He was also appointed a memberof the European Corporate Governance Forumby the European Commission on 15 October <strong>2004</strong>.Gerhard Cromme was appointed as a directorof <strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> in March 2003 to replaceBernd Fahrholz. His appointment was ratifiedby the Annual General Meeting held in May 2003.François GrappotteFrançois Grappotte was born on 21 April 1936and is a French national. He holds anundergraduate degree in <strong>La</strong>w and graduatedegrees in Political Science, Economics and Financefrom the Paris Faculty of <strong>La</strong>w and from Institutd’études politiques de Paris. He is also a graduateof École nationale d’administration.After having served seven years at the Ministryof Industry and the Finance Ministry, from 1963to 1970, François Grappotte worked at BanqueRothschild as an Assistant Director, DeputyDirector then Director (1970-1972), before joiningCompagnie Électro-Mécanique (CEM) as CorporateSecretary in 1973 and becoming its Chief ExecutiveOfficer, which he remained until 1983. At that datehe joined Legrand SA., where he was successivelyChief Executive Officer, Chairman and CEO and,since 1 January <strong>2004</strong>, Chairman of the Boardof Directors.François Grappotte has been a director of <strong>BNP</strong><strong>Paribas</strong> since May 1999 when he was electedto the Board for a term of six years.Jean-François LepetitJean-François Lepetit was born on 21 June 1942and is a French national. He is a graduateof HEC Paris business school and hasan undergraduate degree in <strong>La</strong>w. He beganhis career at Banque de Paris et des Pays-Basfrom 1963 to 1969, when he joined Banquede Suez et de l’Union des Mines, which laterbecame Indosuez. Within the Indosuez Grouphe was Senior Manager, then Assistant Director,Deputy Director, Director, Managing Directorand Vice-President and Board Member of BanqueIndosuez, up to 1996. At this date he becamea member of the Conseil des Marchés Financiers(CMF), where he took over as Chairman in 1998.Jean-François Lepetit was an adviser tothe Chairman and CEO of <strong>BNP</strong> from 1997to 2000. He joined the Collège de la Commissiondes Opérations de Bourse (COB) in 1998, and wasalso a member of the Comité des Établissementsde Crédit et des Entreprises d’Investissement(CECEI) and the Comité de la RéglementationBancaire et Financière (CRBF). He was appointedChairman of the Commission des Opérationsde Bourse (COB) in October 2002 and remainedin this function until the creation of the Autoritédes Marchés Financiers in November 2003,at which time he retired and became an AssociateProfessor at the Edhec business school.Having chaired the COB for more than one year,Jean-François Lepetit sought and obtaineda favourable opinion from the Commissionde déontologie de la Fonction publique
