Social and environmental indicators prescribed by the New Economic Regulations (NRE)NRE indicator 2004 Comments Scope concerned25. Relations with the community, including associations to combatsocial exclusion, educationalinstitutions, amenity and consumerassociations, and local residents.26. Contribution to regionaldevelopment and employment27. Outsourcing and the Bank’spolicy with subcontractors:steps to ensure thatsubcontractors complywith International LabourOrganisation (ILO) standards.Educational institutions: in 2004, entities of the BNP Paribas SA network hadforged over 900 formal or informal partnerships with schools. These relations oftentake the form of offering internships, work experience schemes or apprenticeships. Many of these partnerships also serve to promote the sports, cultural and artisticinitiatives of young people, as well as local projects to help integrate them intothe labour force, fight social exclusion and protect the environment.Consumer organisations: the Quality & Consumer Relations Department withinFrench Retail Banking has set up partnerships with around a dozen consumerrights groups.Assistance with social insertion projects: see Sustainable Development sectionof Annual Report, under Patronage, the remarks on the strengthening of thepartnership with Adie, a non-profit association providing micro loans for businessprojects.Group entities outside France are also responsible for many initiatives, eitherdirectly as in the United Kingdom or the United States, or through locallyestablished foundations as in Brazil, Switzerland or Morocco. The Group seeks to promote economic development in the territories whereit is based by providing its clients with the financing to fuel their development.See Sustainable Development section of the Annual Report, under HumanResources Development – Quantitative and qualitative responses to workforceadaptation. An average of 2.7 new jobs (including the founder‘s) were created in thecompanies set up as part of the previous Employment Adaptation Plan, whichdrew to a close in early 2004.The employees of the call centres for the three client relations centres wererecruited as in-house BNP Paribas staff, which led to the creation of 700 new jobsin France at the end of 2004.The Global Procurement Group (GPG) manages all procurement contracts in excessof EUR 1 million. GPG does business only with suppliers who commit to complyingwith the standards set by the International Labour Organisation, notably regardingchild labour, trade union rights, collective bargaining, forced labour, equalopportunities, working hours, and the minimum wage.BNP Paribas continued to promote this process in 2004, particularly in Asiawhere these international conventions are not always held in the same regardfrom one country to the next.An added tool for the training of the 2,500 GPG employees and procurementfunction correspondents worldwide was the setting up of a SustainableDevelopment area in the Intranet site for the function. The new pages containreminders concerning the mandatory use of contracts that ensure compliancewith labour legislation and warn that loss-making sales are illegal.Going against the grain of the widespread trend toward outsourcing ofinformation technology functions, BNP Paribas opted for a novel solution bycreating a joint venture with IBM France to meet the Group’s IT processing needs. This strategic alliance answers the call for controlling and decreasing IT costs, while preserving a centre of excellence in France with leading-edge technology. Thanks to this original partnership, BNP Paribas is able to stay in commandof its IT capabilities, while ensuring a painless transition for its employees, since all those concerned were able to keep the individual and collective benefitsassociated with their previous status.See point 9SA mainlandFranceInternationalNetworkSA mainlandFranceGroup293BNP PARIBAS - ANNUAL REPORT 2004
