Promoting sustainabledevelopment<strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> helped promote sustainabledevelopment in <strong>2004</strong> by its involvement in severalevents:• <strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> Asset Management contributedto the activities of Sustainable DevelopmentWeek in France, by taking part in a daily radiobroadcast on socially responsible investing.• The London subsidiary hosted an event,organised by Business in the Community andthe French Chamber of Commerce of London,to mark the centennial of the Entente cordiale,in the presence of Prince Charles and the Frenchambassador to the United Kingdom.Promoting SRI analysis<strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> Asset Management (<strong>BNP</strong> PAM),alongside three other major institutional investors,took the initiative of allocating 5% of itscommission budgets to developing analysis basedon the criteria of socially responsible investing.This financial incentive, representing a totalof approximately EUR 5 million for <strong>2004</strong>,is intended for brokers who demonstratethe most effective integration of the criteriaand methodologies of non-financial analysisbased on the social and environmentalresponsibility of companies. Its objective isto bring more comprehensive responses tothe needs of long-term investors andto broaden the range of companies thatcan be considered for investment.By factoring in criteria such as managementquality, codes of conduct or the company’senvironmental and social footprint, SRI analysisassesses corporate performance qualitativelyover the long term. In that sense, it rounds outthe quantitative methods of standard financialanalysis. This Enhanced Analytics Initiative waslaunched in London on 2 November <strong>2004</strong>.Several Group executives teach and provideinput as guest lecturers in the leading master’sprograms in sustainable development createdby French business and engineering schools,as well as by some universities.In France, <strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> is an active memberof the main organisations that are recognisedfor their role in promoting sustainabledevelopment, particularly Orse, the corporatesocial responsibility observatory and EPE(companies for the environment). The Groupwas involved in setting up a sustainabledevelopment club within Anvie, the nationalassociation for the publicising of interdisciplinaryresearch in humanities and social sciencesin the business world.In <strong>2004</strong>, an example of a <strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> bestpractice was added onto the Global Compactwebsite. <strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong> is also significantlyoverhauling its sustainable developmentwebsite to give it more visibility and make itmore accessible to the thousands of visitorsthat consult its pages each month.Assessments by sociallyresponsible investmentrating agencies<strong>BNP</strong> <strong>Paribas</strong>’s inclusion has been confirmedin the key benchmark indices for sociallyresponsible investment – Dow Jones SI World,Dow Jones SI Stoxx, FTSE4Good and AspiEurozone.
