AtGentive IST-4-027529-STP - Attentive Agents for Collaborative Learners1 The agent tells me “A good question is an open question…” but I am on the Workspace /Assignments / Assessment page, which has nothing to do with asking questions. (Maybe I should beon the asking questions page, but that’s not clear).Success in attracting attentionWhere the system attracts the user’s attention, it should do so in a manner that will not be accidentallyoverlooked or misinterpreted1 The agent’s speech bubble disappears rather quickly. Maybe the first speech text after a whileshould stay on the screen longer to allow the user to focus on it. It would be better with audio as well.Key Indicator Two: Performance (Effectiveness and Efficiency)Task is performed wellInterventions should not cause a task to be performed less well overall. Where the intervention isintended to improve the performance of a task, it should do soKey Indicator Three: SatisfactionOverall satisfactionAll suggestions / interventions made by the system should appear to the user to have at least someeffective purpose. The user should not consider any suggestion to be “pointless” or “stupid”Positive image of the animated characterThe user’s immediate reaction to seeing any animated character should be at least neutral andpreferably positive. The user should anticipate that the character’s appearance will make their taskeasier, not more difficult. The user should not have negative feelings about the animated character(threatened, humiliated, etc.)1 The character often repeats a phrase. For example “Your expert does not know yet what you want tolearn…”2 Sometimes, the character’s head becomes much larger prior to speech text appearing. This seems akind of threatening action.User control and freedomThis is an extension to the “standard” heuristic. The user should feel in control of the AtGentiveinterventions. The user should not be worried that they will be interrupted at any moment, or that theyare likely to miss something importantKey Indicator Four: LearningLearning experience is supportedInterventions should not cause the learning experience to be degraded. Where the intervention isintended to improve the learning experience, it should do soKey Indicator Five: CollaborationCollaboration is supportedInterventions should not discourage collaboration. Where the intervention is intended to improvecollaboration, it should do soDel 4.4: AtGentive Final Evaluation Report page 15
