These interventions, which target the learner's actions in the environment,are directed at supporting the learner in effectively moving between activities. There aretwo types of behavioural interventions:• external events notifications• navigational supportThe external events are events that are caused by another user in the learningapplication which have relevance to this specific user. The system evaluates howimportant the information is in relation to the user’s current task and activity, and willdecide to notify or to postpone the notification for a later time. For example, when ananswer is posted to a question on the forum, the agent would tell the current user bysaying:“Your expert has answered your question”Navigational support consists of simple navigational statements to direct the user tocertain elements in the system. AtGentive IST-4-027529-STP - Attentive Agents for Collaborative Learners2.1.5 The animated AgentIn AtGentSchool, the animated agent (“Honza” – see Figure 1) is used for two separatepurposes. All users see Honza as present on the screen. When the student clicks on a“smiley” to give feedback to the system about their mood, Honza reciprocates byadopting a related body state, along with a short narrative.For the experimental group, Honza also delivers the interventions described above byproactively making suggestions intended to assist the student at that moment, given their(assumed) current attention. Interventions relate to the above scenarios. For example, inthe case of Scenario S3 – External events, if an email is received for the student thesystem will wait until it deems the student to be at a suitable break point before informingthem of the new email.2.1.6 Continual developmentAtGentSchool underwent refinements at the pre-pilot stage. In particular, improvementswere made to the agent’s rules (see deliverable D2.2, section 2.4). These changes werebased upon further analysis of the system by Ontdeknet, teachers’ feedback during the“overview training” and understandings gained from the formative evaluations. However,once the pilot study began only essential changes were made to the software.2.1.7 User Evaluation PilotThe user pilot took place in three stages:• Teacher training (pre- pilot)• Pilot (part 1)• Pilot (part 2)The user pilot took place over a six week period beginning 3rd May 2007. Studentstypically used AtGentSchool for either six or seven 45 minutes sessions within thisperiod. (School timetabling did not allow for exact weekly sessions, and included someclasses that took a one week school trip during the pilot.) Students used computers inpairs (with a few exceptions of single or triple use), working together on the computer atthe same time. Half the participants used the original AtGentSchool software, without theinterventions, while half the participants used the new full version of AtGentSchool.Students were randomly assigned into groups (within the requirement of having thesame number of student pairs per class in each group). The children themselves werenot explicitly made aware of the difference in the two systems, or the split into groups.2.1.8 Timetable of eventsBelow is shown the timings for evaluation activities related to AtGentSchool.
