Editing the user profileThe main purpose of this task was to give the participants something to do while a testoperator in the adjacent room attempted to attract the participant’s attention via the built-inchat window in AtGentNet.None of the test participants reacted to the chat stimulus, although one (Participant 1) saidshe had noticed it when interviewed afterwards. However, only participants 3 and 5 had anyfixations at all on the chat window.Distribution of gaze96 % of all fixations were on the edit form (figure 4), with only the chat window and leftcontrol box gathering more than 1 % each.Figure 34 Editing the user profileDiscussion and suggestionsThe distribution of gaze between different elements of the screen is likely to vary dependingon the task. In the first task the participants were asked to look for the latest news, thus it isno surprise that over 60 % of fixations were on news-related items. The fact that there werenot many fixations elsewhere apart from the navigation shows that the participants had littledifficulty in finding the news items.On the second view of the home page participants spent a lot of time looking at thenavigation links, trying to find the help function of the current page. This suggests it ishard to find and could be more prominent.On the Members page participants spent a great deal of time looking at people’s profilefaces, and did not pay much attention to other elements on the screen. Since human facestend to draw attention, participants assumed they would find the requested profile amongthem.
