AtGentive IST-4-027529-STP - Attentive Agents for Collaborative Learners“I’ll directly go to your expert and explain him what you would like to learn.”Figure 6 - Example of a meta-cognitive intervention within AtGentSchoolCognitive interventionsCognitive interventions support the student’s learning process during the execution of alearning activity. Cognitive interventions provide the knowledge and skills necessary toperform the task (Garner, 1987). They support actions with respect to both the contentand context of the learning task and are direct at the level that Nelson referred to as theobject level. These interventions are specifically adjusted to the learning activity at hand. The triggers for cognitive interventions are:• Idle user – as tracked by the ASKME module These interventions also addressScenario S2 – Idle User• User request – namely the student clicks on the “question mark” button. Theseinterventions also address Scenario S3 – External eventsThere are two types of cognitive interventions: cognitive support interventions andcognitive resources interventions. Cognitive support is directed at helping the currentlearning activity whereas a cognitive resource provides students with a link to a resourcein the learning environment that can help them perform the task. For example, acognitive support intervention for the activity “mind-map” (where student have to writedown all topics that are related to the subject that they are studying) would be:“What do you already know about the subject you are going to study?”while a cognitive resource for the same learning activity would be:“Need some ideas? You can read the introduction diary of the expert”Del 4.4: AtGentive Final Evaluation Report page 12
