AtGentive IST-4-027529-STP - Attentive Agents for Collaborative LearnersFigure 1. Colette and the animation viewerThe evaluation was performed in two main phases. Phase 1 selected a subset ofemotions to be tested by an on-line survey in phase 2.3.1 Emotion selection3.1.1 MethodPhase 1 consisted in an expert based-evaluation, supported by well establishedknowledge on signal characteristics of facial expressions and their link to emotionappraisal (Ekman and Friesen, 1975 ), and knowledge on affective semantic of bodyposture (Argyle, 1988). Based on this knowledge, the author systematically analysedthe list of animations and expressions of Colette, testing them individually and inevery possible combinations. The expert based evaluation allowed identifying a smaller subset of combinations(N=30) which were tested with 6 people (3 males and 3 females, covering a broadage range, from 25 to 63). The viewer was operated by the experimenter and washidden to the participant by a cardboard screen taped to the computer screen. Toavoid interferences which could be generated by the label of the animation(automatically displayed in a speech bubble), the part of the screen above Colette’shead was hidden by a dark tape. Under these conditions, participants were shown theset of 30 animations and asked to indicate if they represented a positive, a negativeor a neutral emotion. They were also presented all the individual facial expressionsand selected body animations and asked to name them. At the end of the trial, participants were invited to comment and motivate their scoring for all the animationswhich they had incorrectly labelled. This procedure allowed selecting the 12 stimulitested in the on-line study, and evincing a number of limitations of Colette’s nonverbal repertoire.Del 4.4: AtGentive Final Evaluation Report – Appendix A page 7
